Portrait of a Venetian Family with a Manservant Serving Coffee

Pietro Longhi, c. 1752

In his paintings, Longhi usually poked gentle fun at the everyday activities of the Venetian elite. This is not, however, the case here. It is simply a portrait of a family drinking coffee, with the lady of the house taking centre stage. The conspicuous inclusion of the servant is noteworthy. He must have been a valued member of the household.

    Portret van een Venetiaanse familie met een bediende die koffie serveert. In een met groen damast gestoffeerde salon zitten drie leden van een familie. Rechts, in een houten, groen beklede fauteuil, zit de heer des huizes gekleed in een effen jas, kniebroek en een geborduurd mouwvest. Hij houdt een porseleinen kopje vast. Zijn vrouw zit tegenover hem in een gele fauteuil, bezig met mouwstroken te rimpelen en vast te zetten. Zij draagt een rose robe à l'anglaise van brokaat met een grote groene strik; in beide oren paarlen oorringetjes en op haar achterhoofd een klein wit kapje. Tussen haar en haar man staat een groen en goud gedecoreerd tafeltje, waarop haar naaimandje en een schaar liggen. Achter de tafel staat een bediende, gekleed in een groene jas, vest en klapbroek. Hij houdt een zilveren dienblad in zijn handen met daarop een zilveren koffiepot, suikerschaal en suikertang en twee porseleinen koffiekopjes. Links op een lage stoel zit een man, gekleed in blauw pak en geel vest die een ringvormige oliebol aan een jongetje geeft. Het jongetje draagt een witte rok en houdt een speelgoedtrompet in zijn linkerhand.
