Portret van een schilder, misschien Aert Schouman zelf, in zijn atelier. Een jonge schilder in 'Japonsche rock' en muts rookt een pijp, zittend voor zijn ezel, palet en penselen in de hand. Op de schouw staan gipsbeelden en een schedel, aan de muur hangt een prent op rollen en een schilderij.
