Portrait of Walter van Erven Dorens
anonymous, 1852 - 1858
Walter van Erven Dorens was twenty years old when he left Amsterdam for San Francisco in 1851. He posed confidently wearing the uniform of a volunteer fire brigade. We know who he is thanks to the name of his corps on the belt (Sansome) and the initials on the helmet (WVED). In a daguerreotype, the image is usually shown in reverse.
