Viglius van Aytta van Zwichem, 1507-1577, humanist, jurist, staatsman, geestelijke. Door een onbekende Zuidnederlandse schilder.<BR />Viglius (latijn voor het Friese Wigle) voerde als devies: 'Vita mortalium vigilia' dat is 'Het leven der stervelingen is waken'. Een opsomming van zijn aktiviteiten toont dat hij zijn devies heeft waargemaakt: archivaris en bibliothecaris der Bourgondische vorsten; proost van het kapittel van Sint Bavo, Gent; hoogleraar in de rechten, rechter in de hoogste colleges als het Rijkskamergerecht te Spiers en de Grote Raad te Mechelen. Verder vervulde hij vele politieke functies, waarvan de voornaamste lid van de Consulta of Achterraad, die landvoogdes Margaretha van Parma adviseerde. Na de afstand van Karel V werd Viglius enerzijds verdacht van sympathie voor de hervorming, anderzijds van te grote meegaandheid met het Spaanse bestuur.
