Portrait of Magdalena de Passe

Crispijn van de Passe (II), 1640

Two years after Magdalena de Passe’s death, her brother Crispijn included a portrait of her in a series of illustrations of famous women. In the background is the cathedral tower of Magdalena’s native Utrecht. In the accompanying poetic verses Crispijn wrote about the death of his sister. A loss, he writes, somewhat alleviated by the fact that he still has her art.
