Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (signed by artist), 1922
Betsie and Samuel’s son Jaap was born in 1905. His initials and age (17) are recorded at the top of this woodcut. Jaap studied art history and continued to live with his parents throughout his life. The family was separated while being deported, and he died in Theresienstadt on 30 March 1944.
