Portrait of Isabel Parreño y Arce, Marquise of Llano

Anton Raphael Mengs, 1771 - 1772

This Spanish Marquise was a patron of the art and sciences from an early age. The castanets and mask in her hands refer to the dramatic arts and music, and the classical building behind her to architecture. Inspired by the traditional folk costume of her native La Mancha, her attire demonstrates her pride in her homeland.
