Portrait of Grietgen Jansdr, the Artist’s Wife

Hendrick Goltzius (mentioned on object), 1580

Hendrick Goltzius probably portrayed his wife Grietgen Jansdr here. She looks at us sideway and a gentle smile plays on her lips, lending the likeness an unusually informal character. The accompanying portrait medallion, just like the other precious metal medallions, must have been a cherished treasure. The drill holes visible in impressions of some of them indicate that they were for example worn on a chain.
