When Andreas Everardus van Braam Houckgeest looked in this mirror in Canton, he was briefly reunited with his wife, Catharina, who had stayed behind in the Netherlands. The two women at the lower left mourn a Dutch ship setting sail, while the anchor at the right symbolizes hope. The inscription translates as: ‘Our good wishes accompany he who departs.’

    Achterglasschildering met portret van mevrouw Catharina Cornelia Geertruida van Braam Houckgeest, geboren Van Reede van Oudtshoorn. Het portret heeft de vorm van een geschilderd medaillon dat wordt opgehouden door een allegorische vrouwfiguur (de Hoop). De Hoop zit op een balustrade die gedeeltelijk schuilgaat achter een (waarschijnlijk) Perzisch tapijt. In de balustrade is in reliëf een afscheidsscène gebeeldhouwd: twee vrouwen wuiven een schip uit, waaronder de tekst 'Vota sequuntur euntem', onze goede wensen vergezellen degene die vertrekt. Rechts op de balustrade zijn de wapens van de echtelieden te zien. Op het tapijt een wierookbrander (Azië). De bovenzijde van de schildering is een (nu verweerde) spiegel.
