Portrait of Peter Paul Rubens

Wenceslaus Hollar (mentioned on object), 1644 - 1652

During his career, Wenceslaus Hollar etched nearly 500 portraits. Most of them were based on paintings by artists such as Holbein and Van Dyck. For his portrait of Rubens, however, Hollar did not look at Rubens’ painted self-portrait, but at an engraved copy. The bust and caption were rendered minutely and to the letter. The lavish decorative border was Hollar's own invention.
