Plate with the Coat of Arms of the Sichterman Family

anonymous, c. 1730 - c. 1735

Jan Albert Sichterman was a VOC merchant in Bengal (present-day India). On his return voyage, he took two ships full of possessions, including this plate. These included enslaved servants who travelled with him. While they were legally free in the Netherlands, they nevertheless had to continue working as his servants. Every week, Sichterman would have himself driven through Groningen with them on the box of his carriage.

  • Description

    Schotel van porselein, beschilderd op het glazuur in blauw, rood, groen, zwart en goud. Op het plat het gekroonde wapen van de familie Sichterman met een goud gestippelde achtergrond met daarop een eekhoorn met een blad in zijn poten afgebeeld. Het wapen is omgeven door bladranken in Louis XIV-stijl. Op de wand een 'spearhead-border' en een band met servetwerk (honingraat) onderbroken door vier cartouches met bloeiende planten (prunus). Op de rand tweemaal een paviljoen, tweemaal bloeiende planten bij een hek (prunus, aster), een groep bamboe, nogmaals het familiewapen en een band met krulwerk. Wapenporselein in emailkleuren.
