Paramaribo Waterkant with Jetty

Théodore van Lelyveld, 1895 - 1898

After a roughly three-month journey, the Paramaribo Waterkant finally comes into view for the migrants. It is their first introduction to the country of ‘Sri Ram’ about which the indentured labourers back home in India have heard many positive things. After a series of medical and administrative examinations, they are allowed to disembark to wait in the nearby ‘depot’ for distribution to the plantations.
