Panorama near Bloemendaal with the Saxenburg Estate

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1651

From 1638 the Saxenburg estate belonged to Christoffel Thijsz, the man from whom Rembrandt bought his house on the Jodenbreestraat. Rembrandt possibly made this print as a gift for his creditor. The panorama of Haarlem and Bloemendaal in the distance cannot be observed in a single glance. Rembrandt may have used numerous sketches to recreate the distant vista in its entirety.
