Panel with Kama and Rati

This small panel is unusual because of the inscription at the top, which records either the name of its owner or its maker. Such inscriptions are exceptionally rare in South Asian art.

  • Description

    Rechthoekig paneel met een voorstelling in laagreliëf. In twee vierkante velden de goden Kama (links, god van de liefde) en Rati (godin van het seksueel genot), op hun rijdieren, respectievelijk een papegaai en een gans. De voorstellingen worden omgeven door een eenvoudige parelrand. Boven de velden een inscriptie in Tamil: 'de meester-ambachtsman Shankaramurtti'.
