Tuberculosis was a dangerous illness that could strike easily wherever there was poverty and malnutrition. It was only in the 1960s that an effective cure was discovered. Until then the sole hope of recovery lay in long periods of rest in a healthy environment. This was rarely an option for ordinary workers.
