Narcissus
François Chauveau (1613-1676), etching, c. 1635-1670
François Chauveau set his Narcissus in a rocky landscape. On the left, near the well, we see a statue of a river god, possibly alluding to Narcissus’ father, Cephissus. The hounds seem to smell danger. Chauveau received etching lessons from Laurent de la Hire, and his oeuvre comprises around 1600 prints, mostly book illustrations. This print is part of a series of six stories from the Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid.
