Nocturnal Scene: Couple Walking behind a Woman with a Lantern

Gesina ter Borch, c. 1655

Gesina ter Borch had a penchant for night scenes. In this enchanting little piece, two lovers walk hand in hand in the dark, accompanied by a dog. Their path is lit by a woman with a lantern. Ter Borch first prepared the sheet with a layer of yellow watercolour, which accentuates the warm glow of the candlelight.
