Model of a chain messenger

Rijkswerf Willemsoord, 1828

This model represents the mid-section of a ship’s deck and demonstrates how an anchor was raised. The anchor is attached to a heavy cable, which is too thick to turn around a drum. It is therefore secured to a messenger cable, a long, endless rope that can be wound around a capstan to haul in the anchor cable.

  • Description

    Model voorstellende het middengedeelte van een dek van voorsteven tot kaapstander met twaalf windbomen en acht pallen in de voet. Het model demonstreert een kettingkabelaring, waarvoor de kaapstander is uitgerust met een rand met pallen in de voet van de trommel. Bij de voorsteven gaat de kabelaring over twee verticale rollers, die op getande rails zijn gemonteerd om de spanning van de kabelaring te kunnen bijstellen. De ankerbeting is bekleed met messing, er zijn twee knechten en drie luiken, waarvan de middelste als kabelgat dienst doet. Bij de achterste knecht wordt de kabelaring over rollers geleid. Het model is voorzien van een stokanker met ankerketting, die met opseisknijpers aan de kabelaring is bevestigd. Schaal 1:20.

Explanatory note

  • Deze kabelaring werd in 1831 in Nederland geintroduceerd met de inzending van een artikel van Gordon & Co. aan de redactie van het Tijdschrift voor het zeewezen (V&B). Het model, voorstellende het dek van de korvet van 28 stukken Ajax, werd besteld in 1842 en gedeponeerd in de Modellenkamer in 1844.

Model representing the middle section of a deck from the stem to a capstan with twelve bars and eight pawls in the foot.

The model demonstrates a chain messenger, for which the capstan has a sprocket wheel with teeth in the foot of the barrel. Near the stem, the messenger runs over two vertical rollers that are mounted on toothed rails so that the tension of the chain can be adjusted. The riding bitts have brass sheathing, two knights and three hatches are indicated, of which the middle one is for the chain. Rollers near the aft knight lead the messenger. The model has a stocked anchor with chain cable, attached to the messenger with two pinchers.

This chain messenger was introduced to the Netherlands when Gordon & Co. sent an article to the editors of the journal Verhandelingen en berigten betreffende het zeewezen in 1831. The model, representing the deck of the 28-gun sloop of war Ajax, was ordered in 1842 and added to the Navy Model Room in 1844.2HNA 2.12.01 Min.
