Monstrance from the Convent of the Poor Clares in Amsterdam

According to believers, Christ is actually present in a monstrance, which was the religious highlight of every medieval church treasury. This ambitious showpiece is also the earliest known Amsterdam monstrance. Shaped like an openwork gothic tower with protruding pinnacles, the silver vessel and its base feature all manner of saints who were important to the nuns.

    Torenmonstrans. De monstrans bestaat uit een zeskantig voetstuk en een rijk met pinakels en bladwerk versierde bovenbouw in de vorm van een vieringstoren. Op de voet zijn scènes uit het leven van Franciscus van Assisi gegraveerd, de lunula wordt opgehouden door engelen, en in de bovenbouw zijn de volgende sculpturen opgenomen : Christus als Salvator, de twaalf apostelen, en de heiligen Clara, Catharina, Barbara en Agnes. Het geheel wordt bekroond door een crucifix.
