Model van het bovenstuk van een roer met ronde roerkoning en delen van een elliptisch hek, op grondplank. De roerkoning is gebogen en heeft een achtkantige top, zodat hij met een borgplaat geblokkeerd kan worden. Twee beugels bovenin de kop houden een korte roerpen vast. De onderste roerpen, die onderdeks loopt, heeft aan het einde een verschuifbare ijzeren band met twee draaibare blokken: dit is de 'Rapson-Slide'. Beide roerpennen zijn van ijzer.

Explanatory note

  • De 'slide' was een uitvinding om de speling uit de stuurreep te halen en werd door John Rapson gepatenteerd in 1839. Dit model komt tot in detail overeen met de tekeningen van de brik Zeehond in het RNSM. De Zeehond, lang 30.5 m, was het laatste schip dat op de Rijkswerf van Rotterdam werd gebouwd, door C.J. Glavimans in 1845-1850. Glavimans probeerde in 1845 dit roer voor alle brikken van 12 stukken in te voeren.

Entry

Construction model of the upper part of a round-headed rudder, fitted to an elliptical stern, mounted on a rectangular base.

The rudder head is made of a crooked timber and has an octagonal top, which can be locked by means of a plate with an octagonal hole. Two fittings in the top hold the second tiller. The lower tiller runs beneath the deck. A cylinder that can move forwards and backwards and on which two pulley blocks are fixed, is fitted at the end; this is the Rapson Slide. Both tillers are made of iron.

John Rapson invented and patented this slide in 1839 to solve the problem of the play on the tiller rope. This model agrees in detail with the drawings of the brig Zeehond in Het Scheepvaartmuseum.1Het Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. no. OA IIIAAA-79. Zeehond, 30.5 metres long, was the last vessel built at the Rotterdam Navy dockyard, by Cornelis Jan Glavimans (1796-1857) from 1845 to 1850. In 1845 Glavimans tried to introduce this rudder for use on all 12-gun brigs.2HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 8/6/1845 N70.
