Model of an Anchor

Leiden, Amsterdam, Marseille, 1880

Provenance

...; transferred from the Ministerie van Marine (Department of the Navy), The Hague, to the museum, 1883

Object number: NG-MC-1416

Entry

Model of a ‘flat hand’ anchor.

The arms and flukes are set in the same plane as the anchor stock, but can turn in a hole in the shank. The anchor stock is flat and bent into a V-shape, the ends pointing backwards, and is secured with a wedge. The shank has a shackle at the end and one at the crown.

The evidence concerning the manufacture of this model is contradictory: in 1869 a model existed and was used as a pattern by the Grofsmederij Leiden to produce a number of anchors; however, according to J.J. Backer Dircks, Director of the Navy Model Room at that time, the model was manufactured at the Navy dockyard in Amsterdam in 1880. The archival sources from 1880 he refers to could not be found.

Although the ten anchors manufactured for the Navy by the Grofsmederij Leiden in 1869 had some important errors in their weight, the minister was advised to accept them and they were sent to the Navy dockyard in Amsterdam.

Scale (estimate) 1:10.
