Model of the stern of a 44-gun frigate

anonymous, c. 1822

This model shows the stern of a frigate on a slipway. Rounding of the stern was introduced into ship design in the early 19th century. Although the stern of this model is ornamented with trophies, it is otherwise extremely sober, in keeping with contemporary taste. A prominent feature is the State’s coat-of-arms, carried by all ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The half-rounded gallery accommodates the officers’ latrine.

The model shows a round stern completely filled with vertical filling frames. It has one wale, the frames unplanked beneath the wale. The taffrail is decorated with trophies and has one storey. A half-round stern gallery amidships aft covers the helm port and is decorated with foliage. The straight narrow rudder has a thick square rudder head, on the inside two tiller holes can be seen. The bulwark above the taffrail is decorated with the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Inside are three decks, which are supported by brass knees, the main deck has diagonal framing. The framing is according to Seppings’ system of diagonal trussing with brass joining pieces on the keelson. The model has a set of mizzen channels rigged with deadeyes.
