Model van een deel van het achterschip van een houten dubbelschroefstoomschip (stuurboordzijde), op een grondplank. Het model laat de kiel zien, de spanten met een aantal huidgangen en een deel van de wegering, een metalen huid tussen de huidplanken en de spanten bij de schroefasdoorvoering, twee metalen schotten binnenin, de schroefas met Mangin-schroef. De metalen huid en schotten moeten de asdoorvoering waterdicht maken. De pakking van de as zit in een dik houten blok. De schroefas kan met een handvat gedraaid worden.

Explanatory note

  • Ofschoon de exhibitumnummers bekend zijn, zijn de archiefstukken niet teruggevonden. We weten dat het model in 1864 door een machinist is gemaakt. De Mangin-schroef is niet logisch op een dubbelschroefstoomschip.

Entry

Model of part of the stern (starboard) of a wooden twin screw steamer, mounted on a base.

The model shows the keel, the frames with some planks and part of the interior ceiling, metal sheathing between the frames and the planks, two metal bulkheads and the propeller shaft with a Mangin screw. The sheathing and the bulkheads seal off the area of the screw aperture. The gasket of the shaft is fitted in a thick wooden block. The shaft can be turned by means of a handle. Although the numbers of the archival sources are known, they have not been found.

The model was made in 1864 by an unknown engineer. The Mangin screw is not a logical choice for a twin screw steamer.
