Model of a Stern with Lumley’s Patent Rudder

Zwart en roze model van een elliptisch hek met schroefraam, met twee steunen op een grondplank. De roersteven heeft een hiel en drie roerstellen, de roerkoning is rond en loopt tot op het dek, waar een korte roerpen zit. Het roerblad is verticaal in twee stukken opgedeeld, het achterste deel met drie roerstellen aan het voorste bevestigd. Het achterblad heeft een eigen roerkoning, die aan een schuifmechanisme, dat met drie poten tegen het wulf is bevestigd, vastzit: bij draaiing van het roer slaat het achterblad door dit mechanisme extra ver uit.

Explanatory note

  • Slechts één halfmodel met een Lumleys patentroer is ons bekend: NG-MC-1192. In recente jaren is met hetzelfde principe weer geëxperimenteerd onder de naam 'Becker's flap rudder'. In 1990 kwam I. Gökdemir met een tweedelig scheepsroer van hetzelfde ontwerp op de markt.

Polychromed model of part of an elliptical stern with a screw frame, supported by two trusses, mounted on a base.

The rudder post has a skeg and three rudder irons, the rudder head is round and runs up to the deck, where it has a short tiller. The blade is divided vertically into two sections, the rear section fastened to the front section by three additional rudder irons. The rear section has a separate rudder head, which is fastened to a sliding mechanism fixed with three legs against the counter: when the rudder is turned, the mechanism provides an extra wide angle of deflection to the rear section.

The 6-gun transport Java was built in 1865 with ‘Lumley’s Patent Rudder’. After a successful voyage to the Dutch East Indies from 1866 to 1867, the rudder was replaced by a traditional one. The reports provide no details on the results of the rudder, but further experiments with the double flap rudder were ceased. The results of the tests were passed on to Mr Lumley. In the twentieth century similar rudders have been designed, such as Becker’s flap rudder and Gökdemir’s rudder.
