Joseph Bramah (possibly), 1820

Model van een eenvoudige hydraulische pers op een houten grondplank. Aan de ene kant staat een handbediende pomp, voorzien van een pomparm, regulateur, overloop en veiligheidsklep. De pomparm kan in twee standen gezet worden. De regulateur is een schroef-ventiel. De veiligheidsklep wordt afgesteld met een gewicht. Van de pomp loopt een buis voor de vloeistof naar de onderkant van de pers, waar een ovaal persplatform naar boven gedrukt wordt.

Explanatory note

  • G.M. Roentgen benaderde Joseph Bramah in 1820 om tekeningen van zijn kruitpers te verkrijgen die in de Koninklijke Kruitfabrieken te Waltham Abbey was opgericht. Aanvankelijk was Bramah erg terughoudend, maar schijnt enkele weken later een model te hebben aangeboden. Volgens Obreen werd deze versie van de pers van Bramah gebruikt voor het testen van ankers, kettingen en touwen. De hydraulische pers werd voor vele doeleinden gebruikt en kende daarom meerdere uitvoeringen.

Entry

Demonstration model of a simple hydraulic press on a wooden base. On one side the hand-driven pump with a lever, regulator, outlet and safety valve are indicated. The lever can be set in two different positions. The regulator is a screw-type valve. The safety valve is regulated with a weight. A pipe leads the fluid to the base of the press, where an oval-shaped cheek is pushed upwards.

In 1820 Gerard Moritz Roentgen (1795-1852) approached Joseph Bramah (1748-1814) for drawings of his powder press, which was used at the Royal Powder-Mill at Waltham Abbey.2HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 28/4/1820 N23, 3/5/1820 N16, 27/5/1820 N18. Bramah was very reluctant at first, yet seems to have presented Roentgen with a model only a few weeks later.

According to Obreen this version of Bramah’s press was used to test anchors, chains and ropes.3J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 57. The hydraulic press had many other applications and its installation varied accordingly.
