Model of a Dredger

Model van een baggervlot met baggerbeugel-installatie. De beugel met lange steel wordt met een lier bediend; het takel loopt door een blok aan een tweepootbok. Onder de bok een kraanbalk, die vermoedelijk als hefboomsteun dient. De kaapstander op het voordek werd voor de voortbeweging van het vlot met het anker gebruikt; drie meerpalen aan ieder eind en ringen op het dek langs de lange zijden.

Wooden model of a dredger of the so-called scoop or bag-and-spoon type.

The bag and spoon are operated by means of a winch, the tackle running over a pulley of a bipod gin. The cathead situated between the legs of the gin probably serves as a leverage point. The capstan on the foredeck was used for the anchor and the propulsion of the raft. The raft has rings in the deck along the long sides and three bollards along each short side.

A model of a mud barge, mentioned in Obreen’s catalogue as belonging to this model,1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 26. is missing. The addition of the winch to this type of dredger was patented by Dutch engineer Simon Stevin (1548-1620) in 1589. This type was in use as late as 1830, among other places in the harbour of Hellevoetsluis.2J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 26.
