Tafelmodel dat een deel van een dek met stuurtoestel laat zien, incompleet. De vierkante roerkop heeft een stuurkwadrant, waarvan de tanden in een dwarsliggende schroef zonder eind grijpen; met tandwielen wordt de beweging van het stuurwiel op deze schroef zonder eind overgebracht. Onder de schroef zonder eind is een wijzerplaat van een axiometer aangebracht, waarvan het raderwerk ontbreekt.

Explanatory note

  • Kingston's stuurmachine werd in Engeland beproefd op de brik Icarus in 1817-1819, en geïnstalleerd op het admiraliteitsjacht dat in 1819 Nederland bezocht. G.M. Roentgen legde zijn hand op tekeningen in 1819. Informatie over het model is tegenstrijdig: volgens de archiefstukken werd in 1819 een model aan Kingston geretourneerd. De commisie ter bestudering van de Engelse scheepsbouw in 1822 bestudeerde de uitvinding en besloot het stuurtoestel uit te beproeven aan boord van de brik van 18 stukken de Kemphaan (lang 29.8 m, gebouwd door P. Glavimans Jz. te Rotterdam in 1818-1821) op een reis naar West Indië onder commando van kapt.luit. Dingemans.

Table model showing part of a ship’s deck with steering gear.

The square-headed rudder is equipped with a quadrant, whose teeth engage a horizontal worm gear; a cogwheel on the shaft of the steering wheel transmits the movement to the worm gear. Beneath the worm gear a dial for an axiometer is indicated, of which the gear train is missing.

William Kingston’s steering gear was tested in the United Kingdom on the brig Icarus from 1817 to 1819, and installed on the Admiralty yacht that visited the Netherlands in 1819. Gerard Moritz Roentgen (1795-1852) obtained drawings in 1819. Evidence concerning the model is contradictory: according to the archives a model was returned to Kingston in 1819.

The committee examining British naval architecture in 1822, studied the invention and decided to test Kingston’s steering gear on the 18-gun brig Kemphaan (29.8 metres long, built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam from 1818 to 1821)1A.J.
