William Klein was unsurpassed in combining elegance and rawness. From the 1950s he took both fashion photographs and snapshot-like street scenes. Sometimes he succeeded in combining both elements in a single shot, like this one of a New York society lady. Despite the coarse grain and hard light, the photograph emanates elegance thanks to the cigarette holder.
