Ceylon was celebrated for its ivory and ebony carving, especially for smaller objects. The woodcarvers were Tamils, as in neighbouring southern India where they carved floral patterns in ebony furniture, as they also did in Batavia. Indeed, the floral motifs on this cabinet are remarkably similar to the patterns on the child’s cot also shown in this room.

    Kast van ivoor op vier bolpoten en aan de voorzijde voorzien van twee deuren die een binnenwerk afsluiten dat in kleine laden is onderverdeeld. Het kastje is in- en uitwendig geheel met dunne ivoren platen bedekt, die met ivoren pinnetjes op een houten ondergrond zijn vastgehecht. Het snijwerk dat op deze platen is aangebracht, bestaat uit bloem- en bladranken, die vanuit kleine vazen zich omhoog slingerend alle zijden met hun tropische vegetatie overwoekeren. Het beslag van zilver is eveneens voorzien van bloemmotieven.
