    inscription: ‘In the upper illustration the miner was lying in a narrow working, while the camera was in the main road. This photograph was taken with a flash-light. It was impossible to take the lower photograph by such means; the coal-cutting machine and the two men were several feet within a working measuring only eighteen inches from floor to roof.
