Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter and his Family
Juriaen Jacobsz., 1662
Michiel Adriaansz de Ruyter with his family, by Jurriaen Jacobson, 1662. De Ruyter's glorious career as admiral brought him and his family social status in the Republic and abroad, as this family portrait shows. De Ruyter is holding his staff of office in his left hand. Around his neck is the insignia of the French Order of St. Michel. This was later added to the painting since he only received the chain from the French king, Louis XIV in 1666 (four years after completion of the painting). Seated next to De Ruyter is Anna van Gelder, his third wife. Extreme left is Engel, his son by an earlier marriage. Engel later became a vice-admiral, like his father.
