Mezzetino with a Guitar

Benoît Audran (II) (mentioned on object), 1708 - 1755

This is Mezzetino, a theatrical character in one of Watteau’s most celebrated compositions. He is serenading someone just outside the picture plane. The sculpture of Venus in the background hints that his love may not be reciprocated. Framed by white ruffles, the guitarist’s hands convey the same tension as those playing the recorder in the adjacent drawing.
