Otto Djaya, 1948
Men and women in traditional Javanese dress stand together here, their gaze focused on the red and white Indonesian flag at the heart of the composition. Otto Djaya was staying in Europe when he made this painting, but he must have been familiar with such throngs of people from the early days of the Indonesian revolution. Back then, Djaya, along with other artists, was fighting on the revolutionary front in Indonesia.
