Memorial tablet

Meester van Spes Nostra, c. 1500

This ‘memorial tablet’ was painted in commemoration of the four canons depicted on it. The partially decayed corpse in the open tomb reminds the viewer of his own mortality and asks for his prayers: ‘Whoever passes by, look and weep. What you are, I once was, what I am, you will become, I beseech you to pray for me’.

Description
Vier reguliere kanunniken van het kapittel van Sion van St. Augustinus twee aan twee mediterend aan weerszijden van een geopend graf over de vergankelijkheid van het aards bestaan. In het graf ligt een halfvergaan lijk. Links de heilige Hieronymus, rechts de heilige Augustinus. Op een zodenbank zitten Maria en Elisabeth. Op de achtergrond een ommuurde kloosterhof waarin het Christuskind op een stokpaardje speelt in het gezelschap van engelen.

- inscription, lower centre, beneath the grave: ‘Si quis eris qui transieris hoc respice plora // Sum quod eris quod es ipse fui pro me precor ora’
