Balthasar Jenichen (mentioned on object), 1569

The counts of Egmont and of Horne are among the most important nobles in the Netherlands. Immediately following Alva’s arrival they are imprisoned and accused of high treason, lese-majesty, and supporting the Protestants. Their execution takes place on 5 June 1568 in Brussels’ Grand-Place. News of their beheading travels beyond the Netherlands via prints and is met with great revulsion.

    Memorieprent voor de terechtgestelde graven van Egmond en Horne, 1568. Links de graaf van Egmond, staande in wapenrusting, ten halven lijve, naast zijn doodskist waarbij twee brandende kaarsen. Rechts de graaf van Horne staande in wapenrusting, ten halven lijve, naast zijn doodskist, zonder kaarsen. Op de achtergrond de staken waaraan hun hoofden waren gespietst. Bovenaan een banderol met tekst in het Duits.
