Medal commemorating the Treaty of Münster

Johannes Lutma (1584-1669), 1648

‘A single peace is better than countless victories,’ reads the Latin inscription on the medal that Amsterdam had struck to commemorate the Treaty of Münster. The city anticipated a new era of prosperity and wealth. Goldsmith Lutma thus had free rein to create a very special medal. The gold medals were for the city councillors, the silver ones were presented as gifts.
