Explanatory note

  • Prent uit: Ferrario, Giulio. Le costume ancien et moderne (...). 17 dln. Milaan: Giulio Ferrario, [1815-1829], L' Amerique vol. 1 [1815]. De voorstelling van de Redi Musu is gebaseerd op een prent van William Blake, naar een tekening van John Gabriël Stedman, gepubliceerd in 1796. In 1772 werd in Paramaribo het korps Zwarte Jagers opgericht, bekend als de 'Redi Musu'. Onder leiding van Europese officieren dienden er circa 300 tot slaaf gemaakte mannen in dit korps.
