Marie Jordan, Sitting up in Bed with the Dog

George Hendrik Breitner, c. 1890

The painter Breitner was also a fanatical amateur photographer. His pictures of Amsterdam are widely known, but not the amateur’s intimate personal photographs in a small format, pasted on cardboard. They are from the property of Marie Jordan, Breitner’s girlfriend and later wife. They always remained private.
