Mantel clock (pendule)

Montjoye, Louis, c. 1781 - c. 1782

In 1782 Grand Duke Paul of Russia, the later Tsar Paul I, and his consort, Maria Feodorovna, bought this expen-sive showpiece from the Parisian dealer (marchand-mercier) Dominique Daguerre. With its combination of splendidly worked gilt-bronze (ormolu) and Sèvres porcelain, this clock is a spectacular demonstration of the unrivalled quality of Parisian craftsmanship.

Description
Klok van verguld brons, versierd met Sèvres-plaques. Het voetstuk komt twee keer naar voren en dit wordt gevolgd door het centrale veld erboven, geflankeerd door plaques met groteske-motieven en vrijstaande Toscaanse zuilen. Bovenop een medaillon, gehouden door putti in de wolken, waarin een plaque met soortgelijke voorstelling. Onder de ronde wijzerplaat een putto met kijker, passer, boek en motto. Op het voetstuk in het midden een plaque met herders en bloemen; ernaast plaques met florale motieven.
