This print illustrates a line from the Book of Proverbs in the Hebrew Bible: ‘Because a prostitute is a deep pit, and the adulterous woman a narrow well’. This noble gentleman is about to fall into the trap, lured by the elderly woman, possibly the procuress, to this prostitute’s bed. The fate that awaits him is symbolized by the rope she has tied to his ankle.
