Getting started with the collection:
Lynx (Lynx lynx)
attributed to Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt (1550-1632), with later additions by Jacob Goethals (1759-1838), brown wash, watercolour and opaque paint, heightened with white, with later additions in watercolour, 1596-1601
In the early 19th century the mayor of Bruges, Van Huerne, had the Historia Naturalis re-bound. The drawings were pasted onto pages with framing lines containing the then-current Dutch, Latin, and French names of each creature – such as the tiger on this sheet. In the handwritten caption, however, it is rightly noted that a different animal is probably depicted here. After all, tigers have a long tail and stripes rather than dots.
