‘Le Jockey’

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (mentioned on object), 1899

In his troubled years (1898-1899), Lautrec was an ardent visitor to the horse races. This powerful and dynamic print presents an unusual image of horseracing in that the jockeys are shown from behind. In this way, the man and the animal’s joint performance is shown to best advantage. The print was intended as the first sheet of a series to have been entitled ‘Courses’ (Races), which was never completed.
