Landscapes with the Story of Elijah

Magdalena van de Passe (mentioned on object), 1617 - 1634

Magdalena de Passe based these impressive landscapes on paintings by the landscape painters Adam Willaerts and Roelant Savery. On her own initiative, the printmaker turned them into a narrative series by incorporating in them scenes from the life of the prophet Elijah. De Passe’s subtle engraving technique comes into its own in the rocky outcrops, waters and rolling hills. You can almost distinguish each leaf in the foliage of the trees.
