Landscape with the baptism of the eunuch
Herman van Swanevelt, 1630 - 1639
Herman van Swanevelt (c. 1600 - 1655). Landscape with the baptism of the eunuch, c. 1635. Herman van Swanevelt lived for many years in Rome, where he did this painting. He is known for his sunny, wooded landscapes with hazy panoramas that form the backdrop for a story. Here the subject is the biblical account of the baptism of the eunuch, a popular theme in the 17th century. The apostle Philip met an African eunuch on one of his journeys and converted him. The man then asked to be baptised. Purchased in 1979.
