Landscape near Kortenhoef

Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriel (1828-1903), oil on panel, 1877

Cities expanded rapidly in the late 19th century. Within 50 years, Amsterdam’s population doubled. Many artists wanted to escape the modern cities and move to the country in search of peaceful nature. However, in the Netherlands, even the countryside had been intensively transformed by man. For centuries, vast strips of sea have been dried up to increase the land surface.
