Landscape in Siam with Boats

Jan Luyken, 1687

The French emissaries were conveyed everywhere via the river, and were highly impressed by the richly decorated royal boats. The zigzagging lines in the print reinforce the impression of an endless procession. Also, the printmaker incorporated elements making the image accessible to European viewers, such as the bank in the foreground, the boats calmly plying the water in succession, and the palm trees.
