Getting started with the collection:
La République
Aimé-Jules Dalou (mentioned on object), c. 1882
In 1899, the monumental statue group Triomphe de la République was unveiled in Paris. It was the magnum opus of the sculptor Dalou, who worked on this commission for twenty years. This bronze is a prototype for the central figure, a woman representing the French Republic itself. She stands on a globe. Dalou ultimately opted to place another, clothed version of her atop the monument.
