anonymous, c. 1585 - c. 1600

In September 1628 Piet Heyn surprised the Spanish treasure fleet off Cuba. The Spanish ships were loaded with silver and valuable objects from Mexico and Peru. A percentage of the enormous prize went to the government and was used to finance the war against Spain. Piet Heyn commanded a squadron of the Dutch West India Company (WIC).
