‘Kaboetarie’

‘Kaboetarie,’ the photographer notes in the album from which this photograph is taken. Records show that Kaboetarie was only three years old when she is assigned to the Resolutie Plantation, with contract number M/1031. In this photograph she is about fourteen years old. Van Lelyveld may have edited this shot for one of his articles. His emphasis on the women’s appearance conceals the reality of the hard labour on the plantations.
