Johannes Wtenbogaert

Jacob Adriaensz Backer, 1638

During his long life – he died in 1644 at the age of 87 – Wtenbogaert wrote pamphlets, religious treatises, and, of course, numerous sermons. Backer depicted him in 1638 with his 1619 discourse on ‘the Lord’s Prayer’ on the table. This treatise on one of the best-known prayers, published in the year in which the Remonstrants were under pressure, is a public manifestation of his profound faith.
